An iterative inversion method which takes into account wave energy absorption is described. Some simple impedance models are tested. The results correspondence well with a work done by Gjevik and Nilsen in 1978.

The Riccati equation is a well known difference equation in mathematics used in medicine as well as other fields. We will now apply it on seismic data.

Inversion of reflection data

Introduction
There is a considerable interest in inversion techniques for seismic reflection data. The mathematical problem of how to obtain the properties of a reflecting medium from the properties of the reflected wave field has been studied in many papers. Nilsen and Gjevik (1978) has introduced an iterative inversion method which also takes into account wave energy absorption. They have introduced a viscoelastic Kelvin Voigt model in a traight forward inversion theory. However, no calcuations including absorption is done. In our paper we show that the theory of Nilsen and Gjevik easily can be extended to include a general viso-elastic absorption model and also some calculations on a simple impedance profile has been done.

Nilsen and Gjevik published a paper in Geophysical Prospecting 1978. An iterative inversion method which also takes into account wave energy absorption is described. This method allows estimates of the acoustic impedance in sedimentary layers with nearly plane and paralell stratification. A set of reflection data has been inverted and an impedance model was obtained which correlates well with the essential features of the borehole velocity log.
